Rumah Perlindungan Sosial (RPS) NCWO-YWCA a joint project of the National Council of Women’s Organisation and the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) of Malaysia was set up in Klang in February 1996.
The Domestic Violence Act was passed in 1994 and implemented in June 1996. For the successful implementation of the DVA the NCWO recognised the need for shelters.
On a sustained and temporary basis, Rumah Perlindungan Sosial has, over the past few years, provided holistic help for women, children and teenagers in crisis; inclusive of victims of domestic violence, single mothers, unwed mothers, rape survivors, abused children and runaway teens.
Some of the Home clients though their original crisis was over, were unable to leave the centre and live independently due to lack of family support and inability to earn adequate income. So in August 2001, RPS extended its services to include a Half-way house.
Activities are held dependent on the ‘person-in-the-situation’ and are geared towards reunification of the family. RPS liaise with the Klang Welfare Department, the Police and Hospital Tunku Ampuan Rahimah. Clients are often referred to RPS by governmental and non-governmental agencies.
RPS thanks God for the small group of dedicated women who are service oriented and ever willing to care for the needs of girls, women and children in crisis situations.
- Provide temporary shelter for girls and women (and their children) in crisis situation
- Provide opportunity to discuss their problems either face to face or by telephone
- Arrange for necessary support services such as medical, legal, childcare and job placement where possible:
o When at the shelter
o After having left the shelter
- Empower women to take control of their lives; and learn to make decisions as well as solve conflicts intelligently
